Realignment for Real Relief — Without the Guesswork
Let’s talk about scoliosis. You’ve probably heard the term tossed around at a doctor’s office or during a school nurse screening, but if you or someone you love is dealing with it, you know it’s more than just a “curvy spine.” Scoliosis can affect how you move, feel, sleep, rest, focus, digest and even breathe; if left untreated, those small curves may lead to spinal and nervous system challenges over time.
At Restoring Life Chiropractic, we’re here to help you understand what scoliosis is, how it occurs, how it progresses, and what that means for you or your loved ones health as well as how gentle, neurologically-based chiropractic care can make a world of difference.
So, What Is Scoliosis, Exactly?
Scoliosis is when the lumbar spine or thoracic spine curves sideways, most often in an “S” or reverse “S” shape or sometimes a “C” shape. Although you can be born with a congenital scoliosis, it is actually pretty rare, only affecting approx 1 in 10,000 babies. This occurs when one or more vertebrae are actually formed wrong and appear as a “butterfly” shaped vertebra or a “hemi-vertebra” meaning only having half of the bone that is formed and missing the other half. This can create a curvature as a result of the bones having difficulty in stacking on top of each other properly.
Most cases of scoliosis are formed during childhood or adolescence (adolescent idiopathic scoliosis) or even later in adult life.
The most common causes are from normal lifestyle occurrences that every human being goes through that can change the alignment of the pelvis and spine overtime such as:
- Childhood Falls
- Injuries
- Repetitive postures
- Sports injuries
- Activities that cause asymmetry such as sitting on one foot throughout the day
- Sitting with a big wallet in your back pocket
- Holding all your babies only on one side
- Neurological stress that causes the posture control muscles to fail
- and even more!
These experiences can add up over a certain phase of life or over a lifetime to create the perfect scenario for a curve to develop. Once one curve develops in the spine, typically in the low back, then there is almost always a secondary curve that forms in the upper back.
Some people feel fine with a slight curve and don’t even know it’s there until a relative or nurse or doctor finds it on a wellness check up.
Others might experience:
- Back pain or stiffness
- Uneven shoulders or hips
- Abnormal posture
- Changes in their gait (walking)
- Fatigue from muscle strain
- Constipation
- Headaches
- Rib pain
- Trouble breathing (in severe cases)
Depending on the severity of someone’s curve and the rotation of the vertebra within the curve, side effects from scoliosis can range from mild to severe. Since scoliosis does progress over time, having your spine checked and well maintenanced to minimize the impact on wellbeing is paramount. The earlier the intervention, the better the outcome!
Can Chiropractic Help with Scoliosis?
Absolutely! Chiropractic is the treatment of choice for scoliosis regardless of the cause.
The chiropractic adjustment helps to correct spinal misalignments and minimize the effects of curves in the spine on the nervous system function so that you can still live a life enjoying the things you love the most without the curve in your spine holding you back! Chiropractic care also helps to prevent the progression of scoliosis which is key early on in growth and development and as you age!
At Restoring Life Chiropractic, we use advanced nerve scanning technology to examine how the curvature affects muscle and organ and gland function. Then, using incredibly precise, low-force adjustments, we work to restore alignment, ease muscle tension, and help your body find a more balanced, stable posture.
